Nong Khiaw: Easy Day Trek to Lao, Hmong & Khmu Villages by Boat
An easy private trek from Nong Khiaw by boat and on foot to Lao, Hmong and Khmu villages, with a village lunch and a river ride back.
This relaxed private tour for your group begins with a boat ride on the Nam Ou River. The first stop is Ban Hoihoy, a Lao village where you wander between the houses among chickens, ducks and playing children before returning to the boat for a short ride.
The walking starts here: about an hour and a half on a wide country road framed by limestone mountains and rice terraces. Lunch is prepared by locals in the scenic village of Ban Phayong, where Hmong and Khmu families live side by side, and you can visit the village school and see how the two communities differ.
A second walk of around an hour and a half crosses clear streams and shady forest before the river comes back into view. The boat carries you home past fishing families and swimming buffalo, arriving just before sunset. The trek is easy and suits all ages and fitness levels.
